It has been a longstanding policy of the US that law enforcement does not negotiate with hostages. However, the so called patriot party, the party of Lincoln, the party that freed the slaves has jumped the shark and is threatening to take hostage the credit line if the United States.
The Republicans have so distorted the debate over the debt limit that a majority of Americans are against raising it. However people in the know, know that if the debt limit is not raised, or if the Republicans push this fight to far, the cost of credit that is the lowest its been in decades will cost the US Treasury i.e. the US tax payers millions or billions more and WILL destroy the credit rating of the US.
Republicans have also made a nice little box for themselves that will be tough for them to get out of. Because so many in their party believe the only consequences will be the US lowering spending, they are threatening to primary any Republican that votes for the increase. Further they have economists and Wall Street bankers telling them that they can't paly around with the debt ceiling or they will create economic Armageddon for the US and the world. Speaker John Boehner will be heading to Wall Street to get an earful as they are starting get nervous that the Republicans are gonna screw this up over politics.
