The President Has Smoked Out the Republicans

Republicans yesterday and continuing to day have show their hand, they are NOT serious about fiscal reform. The only thing they are interested in is winning the next election and getting rid of the social compact that has underscored the American dream for more than a half century.

After the President's speech Rep Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Rep John Boehner (R-OH) came out with tough words, saying that Obama was the campaigner in chief and that any tax increases were dead on arrival. This despite the fact that both of the debt commission co-chairs said that you can't cut your way out of this fiscal mess, revenues have to be on the table.

Republicans sounded very confident that they would pass the Ryan plan with strong support from their caucus. In my opinion the president set a political trap and Republicans are getting ready to set it off. If they don't appoint members to the president's debt negotiation panel then they look like they are unserious and petty. If they do and again demand that the President take most of their plan to kill Medicare and walk away the President wins the Senior vote, looking like he and the Democrats saved Medicare. If the Republicans do deal with the president and cut a long term deal that preserves Medicare, the President and the country wins.
