Republicans Are In a Pickle

The Republicans if they choose to shut down the government will have committed the Political equivalence of Hari Kari. There will be no explaining to Independents why they decided to shut down the government over a relatively small amount of money, $28 billion.

In the latest Wall St/MSNBC poll, Independents by a large margin want the two parties to compromise. With Democrats having said they are more than willing to meet the Republicans half way and Republicans saying NO, I don't see how they will not pay a political price with Independents.

If the government does shut down for a long period of time say 4 weeks or more, then I think they will put their majority in jeopardy and if it shuts down for any significant time past that, then they could lose the House in next years election.

The Washington Post is reporting that some Republicans are starting to back away from their parties stance, blaming ideological elements in their party.

Fiscal conservatives have already won a historic change in Washington, forcing a small-government agenda on a government still largely controlled by Democrats.
But Wednesday, some began to recast themselves as victims of the other party.
“They want a government shutdown,” Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) said at a morning news conference. And he said he knew why: The last government shutdowns, in 1995 and 1996, sapped momentum from a previous generation of ambitious Republicans and boosted the sagging fortunes of President Bill Clinton.

I don't get it, Republicans lose any leverage they may have over the bigger fight regarding the debt ceiling? If they shut down the Government then they lose all credibility, no way people will take them seriously.

Democrats are holding fast saying that Republicans are moving the goal posts and that Social Policy riders are unacceptable. Michael O'Brien writing for The Hill, although Democrats have drawn a line in the sand, they still seem more reasonable as they are offering stand alone votes on the riders. So Democrats are compromising and Republicans are saying "My way or the Highway"
