My Thoughts on The Republican Budget Strategy

I have been thinking about this a lot, what are the Republicans doing? Why are they willing to shutdown the Government over a relatively small amount of money?

The only thing I can come up with is that they are trying to gain some type of advantage going into the debt ceiling crisis. It was reported yesterday that the debt limit would be reached on or about May 16th. They know that the Treasury could stave off default for another 6 weeks afterward, however the stock and bond markets would nosedive. As such, I really think that they are betting that the President will be willing to cave rather than have the stock market and bond market in a tizzy.

If the US were to get to the brink AND the stock market tanks AND the bond market sends interests rates through the roof, there is no doubt that Independents would blame all politicians. However, I think the bulk of the blame politically would go to Republicans.  However it would be a pretty high price to pay.

Republicans are openly cheering the fact that they are shutting down the government, cheering! Speaker Boehner got a standing ovation from his caucus because he refused the latest Democratic offers, standing ovation!
